My favorite subjects are animals, birds, plants, and people in their natural settings. I’ve been carrying a camera around since I was a kid. Over the years I have tried to refine my captures from snapshots of the moment to images that reveal something of the character of the subject. It isn’t easy for me, I still make a lot of critter portraits – images which show the critter but don’t always capture what was going on. This is part of the challenge for me. I wander the parks and woods looking for critters being critters and try to capture an image of them doing it. It’s very satisfying when I get home, review the images and find I caught a moment which reveals something of the life of one of these critters. It is the same for people portraits. I prefer to photograph people doing whatever it is they do, than pose them in a studio setting. Photographing people in their environment presents special technical challenges, but the results are often worth the effort.
