An evening with the elk.

After attending Photoshop World in Atlanta, I drove up to the Smoky Mountains National Park. I had hiked through the Smokies years ago while hiking on the Appalachian Trail. At that time I didn’t get to see anything more than a few feet off the trail. This time I was looking to explore the park in greater detail. It was late afternoon and had been raining when I arrived at Cataloochee. I was searching for a herd of elk which had been reintroduced into the park several years ago.

Soon after arriving, I found some of the elk. I was using a 600 mm lens with a 1.4x extender to get these shots. While watching the above elk, another group came across the field directly towards me…

The elk were getting pretty close and didn’t seem to mind me being there at all. To be on the safe side, I removed my camera from the lens and moved away from the approaching herd.

I can only imagine what this elk was thinking when it moved over to the lens and …

got ready for her close up. As gentle as can be she nuzzled the lens for a few seconds. It wasn’t until later that I realized I had forgotten to put a cap on the lens. Turns out I didn’t have to worry.

A Coyote in the Park

After a day of hiking and exploring the Park, I had one more surprise in store. This coyote was in a field and wanting to cross the parking lot which I had pulled into. It took a few minutes before I even realized he was there. There were several people walking about with cameras which is what drew my attention to the critter. The coyote was determined to cross the parking lot but seemed just a bit unsure of the people all about. After about ten minutes, he decided on a different tack and moved off in a wide loop to circle around the people in the lot. Interesting that he didn’t turn away but found a way around his obstacle.

A walk in the woods

Goose Creek-7983

Just back from Photoshop World in Atlanta. Detoured through Great Smoky Mountain National Park where I got some pretty cool images of animals and scenery. Today though it is Easter and the sun is shining, the air is mild and just great for a walk along the creek. It doesn’t hurt it is wild flower time either.

The Trout Lilly seen above is one of my favorites. Not sure how they propagate… there are only about a dozen of them. That is about the same number I’ve seen over the years.

Goose Creek-8175

Don’t know the name of this little gem. It is about 1/4″ wide. I saw it when getting down on my belly to get a better angle on another flower.

Another of the wide variety of flowers growing along the creek… and a perfect day to enjoy them.
